Sovereignty and Grace

What does book does incredibly well is connect the doctrine of predestination with the sovereignty of God. Sproul brings a peculiar perspective – one that asks God’s gods justice and mercy can coexist. This positions the doctrine of predestination as a grace of God.

Sproul tackles free will as well as fallen nature in this book. He shows how predestination impacts the entirety of the Five Points of Calvinism. I was most interested to see how Sproul answers the question of double predestination. He reminds us that all of God’s decisions flow from his holy character. And while the non-elect receive justice, the elect receive mercy.

Strong and Succinct

The book ends in chapter 8: Can we know that we are saved? Sproul challenges us to make our election sure. And he shows that assurance of salvation can be augmented or diminished. While we all have ups and downs, we persevere — because the grace of God preserves us.

This book is a strong and succinct defense for the doctrines of predestination and unconditional election. It is a positive support for the Five Points. Not only will it open your eyes to the great truth of God’s Word, but it will move your heart to trust him and worship.
