Faith Undaunted
Where can we find a solid rock for our faith? In Faith Undaunted, Donald Macleod directs you towards embracing faith and knowledge in a post–truth era.
Believe the Bible
In just over 150 pages and 14 chapters, this book introduces you to the basics of understanding why we can believe the Bible and place our faith in Jesus. Macleod is reasonable and logical, as well as winsome in his writing.
After a foreword by Sinclair B. Ferguson, the book begins by explaining the blessing of an implanted sense of deity. It’s a seed that has been placed in our hearts, giving growth to firmness of faith. Macleod goes on to explain why he sees alternatives to a Creator as being bankrupt — only finding rest in a self-existent God.
Showcasing our Savior
I was most moved in Chapters 4 and 5, where Macleod presents a beautiful picture of Jesus. I was captivated by his uniqueness, as Macleod discussed both his divine and human nature. I was stunned by the resurrection, and the overwhelming evidence of Jesus’ appearances to others. This is worshipful book when it comes to showcasing our Savior.
Chapters 6 and 7 are dedicated to God’s Word, and I was happy to read of the sacredness of Scripture. The Bible is a God-breathed library of books, spanning multiple authors, literary genres, as well as history and time. Most importantly, it tells us of our sin, our Savior, and God’s great love for us. My faith was strengthened, and my heart was encouraged.
Strength and Solid Ground
I was challenged as Macleod explains how our faith is based on facts. Christianity is, after all, Good News. He says that “these facts are in the public domain and every passer-by has a right to express a view on them.” This is why we have a warrant to preach, and not just keep things personal. Still, we must share our personal convictions, giving a reason to others for the hope that is in us.
The book ends with a look at the church and how Jesus is our Good Shepherd who walks with us through all of life. In our sorrows and our joys, Jesus shows us the way we should go. This book will cause you to think clearly about your faith. It will challenge you to be a bit more critical in understanding why you believe. It will show you the sufficiency of Jesus and Scripture — giving you strength, and solid ground.
