He Will Be Enough

Where can we find help when life gets hard? In He Will Be Enough, Katie Faris helps us see how God takes you by the hand through your hardest days.

The School of Suffering

In just over 200 pages, this devotional-style book is a blessing in the school of suffering. After a brief foreword by Joni Eareckson Tada, Faris speaks of her own suffering. She shares specifically of how her children were diagnosed with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency – an inherited disorder that causes lung and liver disease.

Faris uses 20 chapters to show the character of God and how it changes our story in suffering. We learn that God is gracious and compassionate, and that he is trustworthy and has a plan. In the darkness of suffering, these are big truths that shine brighter. Church and corporate singing have a strong role to play in strengthening the hearts of sufferers.

Honesty and Vulnerability

What I most appreciated was the open honesty throughout the book. Faris is vulnerable, but she is not looking for pity. Instead, she points us to Christ. She helps us see that everyone carries their own sorrows. But this does not mean we have to bear them alone. Along with Christ, we have his church. Faris even shares how God brought her friends when she needed them most.

Each chapter ends with reflection questions to help you look deeper into your own heart. And when you don’t have the words, Faris offers short prayers to help bring your heart before God. Throughout the book, Faris gives Scriptural support to her points and helps explain the text – ensuring it gives proper strength to those who are suffering.

Walking with the Shepherd

I was most interested to see how relatable Faris is in her writing. She shares that when suffering comes, our “good works” and service might not be what you thought it would be or look the way you thought it would look. She says that suffering with God’s name on our lips might be the good service God is calling us to do!

When I finished this book, I was left with a sense of hope. If the hard days are not already here, they will eventually come. But Christ will be enough. God  will be our refuge and strength. The valley of the shadow of death will be a shared walk with the Shepherd. And he will see us through.
