I was most challenged to see that Christian marriage thrives when it’s enfolded in the family of church. As a family with young children, it can be difficult for my wife and I to make time for our friends. McLaughlin motivates me to see friendships as a ministry for us to give and receive. Furthermore, mission is the throbbing heart of Christian friendship. We can serve and share together in Christ’s kingdom.

Live Life Together

I learned that the flexibility of friendships should cause us to treasure what we have. While we Christians believe that God directs our paths, we must be understanding when God arranges friends to come and go. It’s vital to invest in multiple close friends. This helps fight against friendship idolatry. But a warning against codependency should not be mistaken for a warning against closeness. Building friendships helps us find our unexplored self.

The book ends with a call to live life together. Friendships are a blessing. When pursued rightly, they can lead us to the greatest friend of all – the Friend of sinners, and the one who laid down his life for us.
