Spirit and Truth
Where and How to Worship God
Aaron Lee | March 14, 2025 | FCBCW AWANA | John 4:23-24
Introduction
Where do we worship God?
To worship something means that you love it more than anything and anyone. Singing is one way we worship God. But we worship God in other ways too, like reading his word, talking to him through prayer, thinking about him, and obeying him.
God says we should worship him alone. The Bible tells us how we should love God in the right way. There are two things you must get right in order to worship God correctly:
But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:23-24)
1. Spirit — in your heart
This is not referring to the Holy Spirit. In this context, it means not in body, but in the heart – with your inner person, your inner being. It’s what you feel on the inside.
2. Truth — with honesty
This means that there should be no deception in your worship. It means to have an honest and humble heart. Authentic and sincere.
Gospel
It’s important to see that God wants us to worship him:
But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:23-24)
Only God can change our hearts to love him. God sent his Son so we could worship him correctly. Our worship must be centered on Jesus — not a place, but a person — for he is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).
Big Idea
True worship of God happens in honest hearts that love Jesus.
Conclusion
Remember I asked you where we worship God? Worship of God is not about location, but about love.
